 WHO: Boost surveillance, Covid protective measures | India News - Times of India

New Delhi: The World Health Organization (WHO) on Sunday urged countries in the Southeast Asian region (SEARO) strengthening Monitoring and for people to take preventive measures in view of increasing cases of respiratory diseases, including those caused by CoVID-19 and its new subtypes. JN.1And Influenza.
The advisory comes amid a steady rise in the number of Covid-19 cases in India, which is a part of SEARO. In the last 24 hours, data shared by the Union Health Ministry shows that 656 people have tested positive. With this, the total number of active cases in the country has increased to 3,742. The death toll due to Covid-19 has risen to 5,33,333 with one fresh death from Kerala in the last 24 hours.
Dr Poonam Khetarpal Singh, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia, said that the Covid-19 virus is evolving, mutating and circulating in all countries globally. “Although current evidence suggests that the additional public health risk posed by JN.1 is low, we must continue to monitor the evolution of these viruses in accordance with our response. This requires countries to strengthen surveillance and sequencing, and Data sharing should be ensured.” Dr. Singh said.
