Students told to clean soak pit; 6 face action, 2 arrested – Times of India


Kolar: Three teachers including the principal of Maraji Desai Residential School in Yaluwahli Malver The taluka, Kolar district, was suspended and three other contract staff were suspended for allegedly deputing students and their wards to classrooms to clean a seepage pit in the school premises, reported Ranganath K. The school has 243 students including 91 girls. The teachers allegedly asked the students to clean the school premises regularly. On Saturday too, the school authorities asked the students to clean the premises during which some students were asked to wade into the soaking pit and clean it. At least 4-5 entered the pit without protective gear and the incident was videographed by a teacher and the video went viral.
Srinivas, Joint Director, Social Welfare Department, Kolar, visited the institution. It was found that the school authorities used the services of the students to clean the premises.
Based on a complaint by the taluk social welfare officer, the Masti police in Malur taluk have registered a case under provisions of the SC/ST Act against three suspended teachers for forcing SC students to clean the pit.
On Saturday, Principal Bharathama noticed that a few students were cleaning the soaking pit and instructed the housekeeping staff not to use the students for such purposes. Srinivas, during a visit to the school, found that some guest teachers attached to the school were inflicting corporal punishment on students and that there was a lack of coordination among the teachers in the school.
Apart from this, the school authorities allegedly collected money from the parents of the students for the construction of the temple on the campus. The joint director, drawing teacher Maniyappa and guest teacher Maresh, videographed and took pictures of the students without their knowledge.
