NewsClick head Amit Chakravarty's move follows extension of probe deadline - Times of India

Chakraborty filed an application under Section 306 of the Cr.P.C. This provision allows the court to pardon an accomplice in a crime on condition that the person makes a full disclosure of all the circumstances within his knowledge of the crime and to every other person concerned in the case.
In this development, the court granted the Special Cell of the Delhi Police an additional 60 days to complete its investigation under Section 43D of the UAPA against Chakraborty and News Click founder Parbir. Porkaist.
The provision gives investigators 90 days to complete the investigation, which would have ended on January 1, 2024. However, it also empowers the courts to grant an extension of up to 180 days to the investigating agency.
A money laundering case is also pending against News Click. The allegations include overvaluation of shares, diversion of funds and violation of FDI regulations.
Newsclick and Purkaisth had earlier approached the Delhi High Court and sought a copy of the Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) filed by the ED. Against them in money laundering case
The High Court issued interim orders on 21 June and 20 July 2021, directing the ED not to take any coercive action against the website and its founder.
In August this year, the Delhi High Court had issued notices to Newsclick and Purkyasth seeking vacating orders by the ED that were protecting the two from prosecution.
