Nepal cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane convicted of raping a minor | Cricket News - Times of India

New Delhi: Former captain of Nepal’s national cricket team… Sandeep Lamechane A court in Kathmandu on Friday found him guilty of raping a minor.
Earlier in January this year, Lamichhane was released by a court after being arrested on charges of a 17-year-old girl, who claimed the cricketer assaulted her in a hotel room in Kathmandu.
The 23-year-old Lamchane stands as Nepal’s most prominent cricketer and is the first player from the country to feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
According to the Kathmandu Post, Judge Shashir Raj Dhakkal, presiding over a single bench, delivered the verdict on Friday after completing the final hearing that began last Sunday.
The Kathmandu District Court on Friday convicted Lamichhane of rape.
The next hearing will determine the jail term for the senior national team member, the report said.
Lamechne is currently out on bail. On January 12, Patton High Court ordered the release of the cricketer. Responding to a review petition filed by Lamichhane, a joint bench of Justices Dharwa Rajnanda and Ramesh Dahal ordered Lamichhane’s release on a bail bond of Rs 20 lakh.
The Kathmandu District Court ordered Lamichhane to be sent to Central Jail in Sindhra after a detention hearing on November 4, 2022. Lamichhane had approached the High Court challenging this order.
The Kathmandu District Attorney’s Office filed a case on August 21 accusing Lamichhane of raping the girl.
The minor had registered a case against the cricketer at Metropolitan Police Circle, Goshala on September 6.
Nepal police arrested him on October 6 at the Tribhuvan International Airport on his return from Trinidad and Tobago, where he played in the Caribbean Premier League.
Through the charge sheet, the District Attorney had sought compensation from Lamichhane for the alleged physical and mental torture of the victim. After the charge sheet was filed, Lamechane’s bank account and property were frozen.
A crafty leg-spinner, armed with a vicious googly, he was a much sought-after cricketer in other big-ticket T20 leagues around the world, including the Big Bash League.BBL) in Australia, Pakistan Super League (PSL) and CPL.
The gifted cricketer holds the record of being the second fastest bowler in the world to take 50 ODI wickets and the third fastest bowler to reach 50 T20I wickets. Lamechane’s last international appearance came in August this year when he played in a T20I against Kenya.
