The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced the National Sports Awards 2023 in New Delhi on Wednesday. Divyakarti was nominated for the award on December 13 and a week later she realized her dream moment.
Based on the recommendations of the committee and after due scrutiny, the government has decided to award several high-performing athletes, including Divyakriti.
The athletes will be felicitated with awards by President Draupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 9 January 2024.
Eminent equestrian athlete Divyakarti from Rajasthan became the only athlete from the state to receive this prestigious award this year. The 23-year-old is the first and only Indian woman to be awarded the Arjuna Award in equestrian sport.
A gold medalist in equestrian at the 2022 Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China a few months ago, he earned his place among the recipients of the highest award by an esteemed committee headed by retired Supreme Court Justice Khan Volkar. An elated Divyakriti said, “It has been a humbling experience, and I am thankful to my horses and my coaches, who played an equally important role in helping me achieve this feat. I am also thankful to my family. “It’s a special feeling to be honored with such a prestigious award,” Divyakarti told TOI on Wednesday.
A confident looking Divyakarti admits that the Arjuna award will not only motivate her to do well in the next few years but also give her more responsibility to live up to everyone’s expectations.
“This is definitely a motivational award for me. I am happy to be the first woman sportsperson to receive the Arjuna Award in equestrian sports. It will keep me pumped to work harder and harder. I will use this as a launch pad. I want to make the country more famous. I may be the first, but I want to see more girls win this award in the future,” said Divyakarti.
Over the past three years, Divyakriti has showcased her skills at the famous Hof Kasselmann Dressage Yard in Hagen, Germany. Her impressive performances in 2023 include contributing to the gold medal-winning dressage team in Hangzhou and winning individual silver and two bronze medals at the International Dressage Competition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia last month.
In addition to her recent achievements, Divyakriti’s world ranking in equestrian sports has been pointed out. As of March 2023, she was ranked No. 1 in Asia and No. 14 in the world in the Global Dressage Rankings issued by the International Equestrian Federation.
Divyakarti, an alumnus of The Palace School, Jaipur, and Mayo College Girls School, Ajmer, is now preparing herself for the upcoming major international competitions as well as the Olympics.
“My coaches asked me to take a break after the Saudi Arabia tourney, so I am now spending quality time with my family in Jaipur. I will resume my training in Germany in mid-January. I will continue training for the next two years. I plan to do well in the Asian Championships and other international meets,” Divyakarti added.
Divyakarti’s father Vikram Singh Rathore called it a memorable day for the family. “I am proud of my daughter and her achievement. I also want to thank the authorities for recognizing her outstanding performance and giving her an award in horse riding.
