ITBP fortifies security at Kedar, Badri shrines for winter break | Dehradun News - Times of India

Dehradun: The Indo-Tibetan Border Force (ITBP) on Monday took over the security of Kedarnath and Badrinath, the holy sites now closed for the six-month winter break. A dedicated ITBP platoon has been strategically deployed at each location.
The Union Home Ministry approved the tight security arrangement last year following concerns raised by TOI over the sanctity of the Kedarnath temple, where a major donation of 23 kg gold, worth Rs 14.3 crore, entered the sanctum sanctorum. Decorated It consists of four pillars, the ‘Jalhari’ (the boundary around the Shiv Linga), the ‘Chhattar’ (Sham) and the inner wall.
Speaking to TOI, Badri Kedar Temple Committee Chairperson, Ajendra Ajay said, “Like last year, we raised the security issue with the state government, requesting additional forces from the Home Ministry. The ITBP teams arrived on Sunday. ” Each platoon, consisting of 25 personnel, will guard the shrines until they reopen next year.
While the development of Phase II at Kedarnath is underway, the Badrinath Master Plan is in progress.
Despite the winter shutdown, both sites are buzzing with activity due to the presence of hundreds, including workers. Kedarnath attracted 19.6 lakh pilgrims in the 2023 pilgrim season, followed by Badrinath with 18.3 lakh, Gangotri with 9 lakh, and Yamunotri with 7.3 lakh devotees.
Shri Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee’s media in-charge Harish Gaur cited the constant movement of personnel involved in the ongoing reconstruction projects as the reason for beefing up security. He said that one platoon of ITBP has been deployed at both the temples.
Ajay added that the gold plating work at Kedarnath and the reconstruction work at both Kedarpuri and Badrinath are going on. Despite being closed for the winter, the temples remain active due to construction activities. Since the closure of the temples last year, security measures have been stepped up around them.
