New Delhi: According to Eric SimmonsBowling consultant for Chennai Super Kings, techniques that work against Mahendra Singh Dhoni Training sessions also tend to work effectively in real-world scenarios. Dhoni is the “batting template” for the team’s death bowling.

Dhoni came out in the last four balls of CSK’s innings and hit the first three sixes to help the team post 26 runs in the last over of the Mumbai Indians skipper. Hardik Pandya Sunday night in Mumbai.
Their late burst proved decisive as CSK beat MI by 20 runs to clinch the third spot in the IPL standings.
“They’re looking to restrict us to less than 200 and then all of a sudden they’re facing 206 with an over like that. Every time – we stay close – he keeps surprising us. Out there. Go and hit the first ball like that for a six and then continue the way he does.
“But he is batting exceptionally well in the nets…another incredible moment from MS Dhoni,” added the South African.

According to former India bowling coach Simmons, Dhoni’s batting style serves as a model for CSK’s efforts to test their bowling ability in the final overs.
“His composure on the wicket… we use that as a batting template when we bowl at the death, pre-season because he’s so good at it. If we can test our theories against him, we know. We are going to do well,” he said.
Simmons admitted that Dhoni has been struggling with his knee injury but he battled it out bravely without showing any discomfort.
“Everybody’s more interested in his injuries than he is. He’s one of the toughest guys I’ve ever dealt with. I don’t even think we know how much he hurts. May or may not he just carries on and does his job,” he said.
“I believe there’s something wrong with him. He just has the ability to ignore it and do what needs to be done. We’re more concerned about his injuries. When I say We, I mean the public (who) is more concerned about his injuries,” Simmons added.
Simmons said that while Mathisha Pathirana (4/28) deserved credit for CSK’s win, Tushar Deshpande and Shardul Thakur were the “unsung heroes”.
He said, “Shardul bowled one of the best overs I have ever seen. We talk about execution, you go and look at the impact points in that over that he scored two runs. It was brilliant. “
“Mathesha will get a lot of praise and he deserves it because of the way he bowled and the success he got. But both of those guys have done exceptionally well for us in the middle stages so far. The rate should be put out of Mumbai Indians’ reach,” said Simmons.
However, Simmons appealed for further clarification of the broad rule because he claimed that the existing laws were not specific enough.
“If they give us broad rules, proper understanding, then we can structure the overs strategically. This is not a criticism of the umpires, but because it is an interpretation, it makes it difficult. “If White knew what it was and how it worked, then we could use the broader rules cleverly,” he said.
“For example, if a batsman stays outside the leg-stump, it doesn’t matter where he goes, if we have a heel for the target and he wants to go into the stumps, it’s his. The problem is the broad line. We can use the broad rule very cleverly and make it a bit more competitive.
