Bhubaneswar: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar has a research plans to investigate Manufacturing Iron beams used in the construction of the Sun Temple at Konark during the 13th century.
Researchers are working to explore this to unlock methods of manufacturing iron beams. Konark Sun TempleOfficial sources said that highlighted India’s rich but neglected technological capabilities.
The research project, titled ‘Forgetting the Past: Analyzing the Production of Iron Beams Used in the Konark Sun Temple and Their Socio-Economic Impact on the Local Community’, was conducted by the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) under the Ministry of Education. ) has approved. In May this year.
The project was led by Subhankarpati, Associate Professor. IIT Bhubaneswarsaid that the study would be non-destructive in nature and emphasized that no physical changes would be made to the historic iron beams of Konark.
“The project includes the study of ancient technological knowledge, analysis of archaeological aspects, and socio-economic assessments, which will lead to the recreation of an ancient iron-making laboratory in the future. Any missing links Past records will also be reviewed to find out,” Pati said.
Corrosion studies conducted onsite using a portable machine have yielded promising results, the researcher said. “Konark iron beams exhibited corrosion resistance that was almost two orders of magnitude higher than contemporary steel beams. Although iron beams may lack certain properties such as ductility and weldability,” Pati said.
He highlighted that invaluable lessons can be learned from India’s past technological progress.
An official statement from the National Institute said that the research not only contributes to the mission of IKS but also demonstrates the potential for India to regain its historical technological prowess. The IIT Bhubaneswar team, along with co-investigators and collaborators, is dedicated to preserving and disseminating this invaluable knowledge, he added.
“This initiative, as part of IKS’s mission to promote interdisciplinary research and revive lost technologies, is seamlessly aligned with the vision of the Bharatiya Gyan Samurdhan Yojana,” the official statement said. .
Naresh Chandra Sahu and Parthasarathy D. from IIT Bhubaneswar, Shivashankar Panda from Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) have joined the project as co-investigators. Besides, former professor Omkar Nath Mohanty of IIT Kharagpur and DB Gurnaik of ASI have joined the research project as collaborators.
