New Delhi: Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is questioning Indian passengers who arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday morning after their flight was grounded by French authorities.Smuggling‘ concerns.
While some passengers were allowed to leave after brief questioning by CISF officials, the rest are still being questioned.
A chartered flight, carrying 276 passengers, landed at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport early on Tuesday. Leaving the airport after arriving from France, passengers did their best to avoid questions from the waiting media.
While 25 people, including two minors, expressed a desire to apply for political asylum, two were arrested, brought before a judge and held as supporting witnesses.
The plane, which was grounded by French authorities last week, was en route to Nicaragua. It was grounded on a ‘technical stop’ at Vitry Airport in France. The flight was en route from Dubai to Nicaragua with 303 passengers on board.
French authorities launched a judicial investigation into the circumstances and purpose of the trip, with a unit specializing in organized crime investigating suspected human trafficking. Nicaragua has become a popular destination for asylum seekers in the United States.
Earlier on Monday, the Indian Embassy in France thanked the French government and Vitry airport authorities for their hospitality and prompt resolution of the situation that allowed the Indian passengers to return home.
“Thanks to the French Government and Vitry Airport for quickly resolving the situation to enable the Indian passengers to return home and receive hospitality. Also for working closely with the Embassy team, which is in place to ensure welfare and a smooth and safe return. Thanks also to the agencies in India,” the Indian Embassy in France said in a post on X.

The embassy also appreciated the cooperation of the French authorities for working closely with the embassy team and ensuring the safe return of the citizens.
