 Fresh violence erupts in Manipur, one left injured | India News - Times of India

New Delhi: One person was injured in the recent firing between armed men. Village volunteers and unidentified gunmen near Herok village in Thoubal district of Manipur on Friday. The clashes began when unidentified gunmen opened fire on the village of Herok in the early hours of Friday, prompting a response from the village’s volunteers, the law enforcement agency reported.
“The exchange of firing continued for an hour followed by sporadic firing during which one person, identified as Nangthujam James Singh, was injured. Gunshot wound and admitted to a private hospital in Imphal,” according to police sources.
Officials revealed that additional forces of state and central police have been deployed in the region to handle the situation and conduct operations.
In another incident, suspected miscreants set fire to a sawmill near Palil in Kakching district, adjacent to Thoubal district, in the early hours of Friday morning.
“Fire tenders were rushed to the spot but the fire broke out,” police sources revealed. The police further said that the security forces have started operations to arrest the accused.
Manipur was plunged into turmoil in May last year when communal strife erupted after a ‘tribal solidarity march’ to protest against the demand of the Scheduled Tribe (ST) by the Meiti community in the hill districts. Subsequent counter-protests and blockades organized by the Meiti community led to clashes across Manipur. Since the start of these clashes, more than 160 people have been killed, with hundreds injured.
