TimesofIndia.com caught up with Bopara, who played 13 Tests, 120 ODIs and 38 T20Is for England between 2007 and 2015, in an exclusive interview and talked about England’s disappointing ODI World Cup campaign. And he aims to defend the T20 World Cup title, India’s T20 World Cup hopes, Virat, Rohit and more.
Things did not go according to plan for England in the ODI World Cup. Can they defend their T20 World Cup title next year?
England is a very strong T20 team. They are stronger in T20Is than 50 overs. I am confident that England will go ahead and defend the T20 World Cup title. England’s T20 team has many players who can turn the tide of the game. Jos Buttler is there. Will Jacks is there. Adil Rashid is present. They are class acts that have been doing so well for so many years. Every player in the T20 team is a match winner for England and can turn the tide of the match at any time.
Ben Stokes’ ODI World Cup has not been good. How much will England need him in the T20 World Cup?
England will need Ben a lot in the T20 World Cup. He is a match winner. He can come into play in any situation and can take any pressure off the team. He excels in both batting and bowling. It is important that he bowls for England so that he can be the sixth bowling option for the team. His presence will ensure a bigger and stronger England batting line-up.
How much will India need Virat and Rohit in T20 World Cup?
much more. India will need his presence in the crucial tournament. They should be there and in good shape. India will want him to score big runs. He is scoring big runs and then other cameo players can do well for India. You have SKY (Surya Kumar Yadav) there. He is going to be the most dangerous player in the Indian lineup. These three fires are very important.

How difficult will it be for Hardik Pandya to fill Rohit’s shoes at Mumbai Indians, who have five IPL titles to their name?
Rohit Sharma has made the MI side. That is the champion side. Now Hardik will lead this champion team. They have star players and game changers. Hardik will work with the best players. Apart from captaining the team, good batting and bowling will also be important for Hardik. I hope he has a good tournament with both bat and ball and will help MI succeed and win the tournament. I wish him all the luck.
What is your favorite moment compared to India?
My favorite moment against India was watching Sachin Tendulkar walk out to bat for the first time. He was my childhood hero, so seeing him come out and batting and playing against him was probably my favorite moment. From the IPL, my favorite moment was when I played my first season in South Africa (in 2009) and I scored 80 for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) at Kingsmead, Durban. I was declared ‘Man of the Match’.
You also played for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Pat Cummins was recently bought by SRH for Rs 20.50 crore. Should the 2023 World Cup winning captain be handed the captaincy of SRH for the upcoming season?
Possibly. He is an Australian captain and more than that he recently led Australia to the World Cup title. I believe SRH will stick with Cummins to lead the team. However, it is better for me to stick to the local captain as he understands his team and the team very well. But since Cummins is coming off the back of guiding Australia to a World Cup win, he is also a good option.

You are currently playing in the American Premier League. What has been your experience so far?
I am enjoying it. It’s an exciting league, a new league. You can’t compare it with other leagues right now. It is very small compared to other leagues. But there are many cricketers here. I hope to win as many matches as possible for my team.
