New Delhi: Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma issued an apology after his now-deleted post on social media platform X sparked accusations by various opposition leaders of promoting caste division.
In the post, Sarma claimed that according to the Gita, Shudras have a duty to serve the other three castes – Brahmins, Kshatriyas and Vaishyas.
This sparked a row, with opposition leaders denouncing what they called the “humanist ideology of the BJP” and Owaisi specifically calling Hindutva against the principles of freedom, equality, fraternity and justice. Criticized.
Facing mounting criticism, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday issued an apology acknowledging the error in the translation. He clarified that the post was based on a mistranslation of a sloka from the Bhagavad Gita.

Sarma immediately deleted the post as he realized the mistake and emphasized that the state of Assam reflects a caste-free society, due to the reform movement led by Mahapuresh Srimantha Sankardeva. .
In his statement, the Assam chief minister explained that he follows a routine of uploading a sloka from the Bhagavad Gita every morning on his social media handles. He regretted any offense caused by the deleted post and offered a sincere apology to those affected.
