Ammonia gas leak: Nine hospitalised in Tamil Nadu's Ennore | Chennai News - Times of India

CHENNAI: At least nine people were shifted to hospital and 230 were evacuated with injuries. Outgassing From the facility of composting, is involved in the preparation of Ammonium Phosphate Potash Sulphate (APPS), at Anwar in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday night.
M/s Coromandel International Ltd’s unit at Ennore manufactures about four tonnes of APPS a year. At around 11.45 pm, due to pressure drop in the pipeline, a strong odor was emitted around the storage terminal and near the material gate. Gas bubbles were seen in the pipeline across the road. Environment Secretary Supriya Sahu said the unit immediately started suppressing the pipeline by igniting ammonia vapors and completed the operation within 20 minutes.
Within minutes, people in the surrounding areas of Anwar complained of vomiting and nausea. Sixteen ambulances were deployed by the Emergency Management Research Institute. Six people were shifted to Stanley Medical College Hospital and three to a private hospital. Doctors said that the condition of all the patients is stable. At least 230 others were moved to a community hall.
Complaints of stench have been received from Periyakopam, Chinnakopam and a few other villages.
