As per the rules laid down by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), all crew members are required to undergo pre-flight breathalyzer examinations prior to their first departure during a period of flight duty.
If a staff member tests positive for these tests, severe punishments are meted out. In case of first failure, suspension from flying duty for a period of three months is the prescribed penalty.
Last year, the DGCA had revised the norms related to medical examination of aircrew with regard to alcohol consumption. The regulations prohibit the use of any substance containing alcohol, including mouthwash or tooth gel, that could potentially result in a breathalyzer test.
“No staff member shall use any medication/formulation or use any substance eg mouthwash/tooth gel or any product containing alcohol. This may result in a positive breathalyser test. “Any crew member undergoing such medication should consult a company doctor before taking up a flying assignment,” according to the regulator.
Additionally, crew members taking medication are advised to consult a company physician before performing any flight duties.
